Hatha Yoga for a Breech Position: Postures That Invite Your Baby to Turn

Time and again I am asked in my classes which yoga postures can help to gently encourage the baby out of a breech position into the birthing position. Here is a first, gentle look at it.

Time and again I am asked in my classes which postures are possible for turning the baby, in order to encourage your baby to move into the birthing position. By this I mean that it slides head-down into the lesser pelvis. There are several ways to practise poses from Hatha Yoga for this.

When the baby is in a breech position

A breech position means that, towards the end of the pregnancy, your baby is lying with its bottom or feet downwards rather than head-down. Many expectant mothers then wish to gently invite their child to turn after all. Hatha Yoga offers several ways to work with this, with mindfulness and patience.

Important: Take care with poses lying on your back

With some exercises, however, you should be especially mindful.

Particularly with poses lying on your back, you should choose alternatives if you have a vena cava problem, or else shorten the exercises.

In such moments, be sure to listen to your body and to what your midwife or your doctor recommends. Yoga during pregnancy thrives on meeting yourself with gentleness and attentiveness.

Note: This article is intended as an introductory text and offers an introduction to the topic. Concrete instructions and individual postures are best discussed together in a class, where I can respond to you and your very personal situation.
